Looking for some fresh air? Then why not take a trip to the Butte-aux-Cailles, a picturesque and absolutely charming neighborhood in the 13th arrondissement? We'll show you the way!
With its village-like feel perched on an ancient hill, Butte aux Cailles reveals its charms to those who venture there. Its sloping cobbled streets, lined with little houses with lush green gardens , will leave you breathless. Quite simply, it's like being in the countryside!
But don't be fooled into thinking that Butte-aux-Cailles is boring! It's just as peaceful during the day as it islively in the evening, thanks to its many sidewalk cafés, restaurants and terraces where the locals gather. Fans of street art will love wandering the streets in search of the many works painted on the walls.
The Butte-aux-Cailles owes its name - not to the cute little fowl as some of you (including me) might imagine - but to Pierre Caille, who bought this hill covered with meadows, woods and windmills in 1543. During the 17th century, the Butte became the site of a number of businesses: laundries, tanneries and limestone mines soon made the area unhealthy.
Over the next two centuries, however, the Butte regained its splendor, becoming (and, above all, remaining!) the charming village we know today. Luckily, the limestone quarries beneath the Butte-aux-Cailles prevent any heavy construction!
As you stroll along, take a look at the pretty Place Paul Verlaine and Square des Peupliers, built in 1926 - in fact, a beautiful triangular cul-de-sac surrounded by small flower-filled houses.
Enjoy your stroll!
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
