In the mood for a romantic stroll on Valentine’s Day? The Parc Monceau undoubtedly is THE perfect garden for lovebirds in Paris with antique columns, and mysterious decors hidden in the greenery. At the origin, the parc Monceau was a green area designed for Louis-Philippe of Orleans by painter Carmontelle in the 18th century. Genuine ode to excessiveness, it was to include caves, a mill, a pagoda, a temple…
Eventually abandoned, another park has been created over it, in 1860. Less incredible, it yet is one of Parisians’ favorite parks for its beauty and calm. At the border of the 8th and 17th arrondissement, the parc Monceau is an English-formal garden, including a very bucolic and romantic look, especially when one goes by the colonnades.
At the northern entrance of the park, rue de Courcelles, one can enjoy a neo-classic rotunda surrounded by a 16-column peristyle, very gorgeous. This Greek inspiration is also found in the park’s masterpiece, the Naumachia. This is one of the elements from the original park that consists in a pool surrounded by a colonnade. At first, it could look like an old antique ruin, but far from it. This colonnade from the 16th century is a vestige of the Valois’ rotunda.
To continue this timeless stroll, discover hidden little Egyptian treasures such as a pyramid, an obelisk, or even a sarcophagus, from the first park. All along the stroll, you will see many marble statues in tribute to writers or musicians, or even mythical allegories from old times. A few real ruins do exist as well, such as an arch or two pairs of columns from the 19th century.
If you feel like enjoying an intimate moment, a small cave and waterfall will keep your romantic memories. All around, a river, a bridge and elegant greenery on sunny days just take this romantic landscape to the next level.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
