India has been facing with a very worrying surge of the epidemic for weeks. This May 24, 2021, the country exceeds 300,000 deaths because of Covid-19, according to the Health Minister. Because of the Indian variant - detected in the country this past October - the number of new contaminations keeps on increasing.
The World Health Organization also judges the B.1.617 variant – more commonly known as Indian variant – as a "variant of concern". This Wednesday May 26, 2021, the WHO also unveils they have detected the Indian strain in at least 53 territories around the world. According to the report, the Indian variant is characterized by increased transmissibility. Furthermore, a study is going on to find out about the seriousness of cases involved.
Although India is the country the hardest-hit by this B.1.617 variant, the United Kingdom is the second territory where the greatest number of contaminations - to the Indian variant - have been recorded.

Yet, in their latest report, WHO said they have noticed a decline in the new case and Covid-19 death toll, especially in Europe and South-Eastern Asia. "Despite a declining global trend over the past four weeks, incidence of Covid-19 cases and deaths remain high, and substantial increases have been observed in many countries throughout the world", the report issued this May 26 by WHO reads.
The World Health Organization also reports India is the country where the highest number of new cases has been recorded over the past seven days with 1,846,055 new cases. But this data is declining by 23%. Then follow Argentina (213,046 increasing by 41%), the United States of America (188,410, declining by 20%), and Colombia (107,590, declining by 7%).
