The fifth wave is here and the epidemic resurgence is going strong. This Tuesday November 23, at the National Assembly, Olivier Véran warns: “Today we are announcing 30,000 new cases over the past 24h”.

Data are not good: 8,525 people suffering from Covid-19 are currently at the hospital. Intensive care units have admitted 1,455 severe Covid cases. Over the past 24 hours, France has recorded 84 new pandemic-related deaths.

But what worries the French government the most is the contamination peak reported recently. “Today, we are announcing 30,000 new Covid-19 cases over the past 24 hours. This is a major increase showing we are in the fifth epidemic wave”, Olivier Véran warns during a Q&A session at the National Assembly.

France has not experienced such a rise in contaminations since August 11, when the country was in the middle of the fourth wave.

Such data could force the government to instate restrictions for the end of the year in order to stop this fifth wave as soon as possible. Health pass, lockdown, reimplementation of gauges, compulsory vaccination… Many options are likely although the government did not mention any additional measure so far.

Véran yet added to the deputies the “booster-shot campaign might have to be extended soon”: a third dose of vaccine could be recommended to people aged 40+.
