Like for its European neighbors, France is now facing a resurgence of the Covid-19 epidemic. according to the Head of the Scientific Committee Jean-François Delfraissy, “the real Delta variant wave is coming, it’s the fifth wave”.

The health situation is deteriorating in France. With a major increase in new Covid-19 cases in the country and the incidence rate now over 200 in a third of departments in France, the epidemic is gaining ground again. After the “small wave” this summer, the “real Delta variant wave is coming, it is the fifth wave”, Head of the Scientific Committee Jean-François Delfraissy claimed during a symposium held this November 22, 2021 in Paris by the Ordre des Pharmaciens – The Order of Pharmacists.

But what is to be expected in the weeks to come? Shall one fear health venues to be overwhelmed? He says this fifth wave will have a “major impact” on hospitals spared until then. According to his estimations, “1,000 to 1,500 hospitalizations per day” could be recorded and “for several weeks”. But the professor intends to sound reassuring saying the hospitalization peak of this fifth wave will be “much more limited” than during the 3rd wave this past Spring.

Yet, this November 22, Jean-François Delfraissy wanted to alert healthcare givers saying they will “experience it for several weeks”, even speaking of “difficult weeks around Christmas”. Estimations shared by the AP-HP. According to Paris hospitals, the fifth epidemic wave will peak by late December or January.

So, what can one do to limit contaminations and hospitalizations? During the symposium, Delfraissy said “the vaccine will not be enough”, adding it will be necessary to “reinstate restrictions” such as “facemask-wearing”, once again compulsory outdoors in 28 departments in France.
