The World Health Organization is always here to call to order. This Tuesday February 8, 2022, the WHO intended to remind the impact of the Omicron variant on the global pandemic, although it is considered as less deadly than the previous variants, but yet has a major impact on the world’s health over the past months.
Furthermore, the WHO spoke of half a million deaths because of Covid since Omicron has been discovered, qualifying this observation “beyond tragic”. “While everyone was saying Omicron is milder, (they) missed the point that half a million people have died since this was detected”, WHO's incident manager Abdi Mahamud said.
As for Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO's technical lead on COVID-19, she said: “We're still in the middle of this pandemic. I hope we're getting closer to the end of it” but “Many countries have not passed their peak of Omicron yet” and “this virus continues to be dangerous”.
Furthermore, the World Health Organization asked wealthy countries to urgently give 16 billion dollars to keep fighting against the pandemic. “Science gave us the tools to fight Covid-19; if they are shared globally in solidarity, we can end Covid-19 as a global health emergency this year”, WHO’s General Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.
