There are many interesting facts to know about the city of Saint-Denis. This commune is the most populous in Seine-Saint-Denis, and the third most populous in the Île-de-France region, after Paris and Boulogne-Billancourt, with over 113,100 inhabitants, according to a 2020 census. These citizens are called Dionysiens.
Saint-Denis takes its name from the first bishop of Paris, a 3rd-century martyr whose tomb can be found in the Saint-Denis basilica. There's no shortage of such anecdotes! The city of Paris is full ofhistory, jewels and mysteries waiting to be discovered.
And that's what the Heritage Days are all about. This European cultural event is back for its 41st edition, on September 21 and 22, 2024. To mark the occasion, a large number of venues are opening their doors to the public, allowing us to enjoy the beauty and interesting sites that abound in Saint-Denis. We can't afford to miss this weekend of outings and strolls: we absolutely must take part in these festive events, organized in every corner of the city.

City tours
As part of the Journées Européennes du Patrimoine 2024, dive into the heart of the project to reassemble the Parisian spires from the Basilique Saint-Denis to Notre Dame de Paris!
Devoured by flames on April 15, 2019, and battered by hurricanes between 1842 and 1845, the spires are now taking their revenge! From the beating heart of France with Abélard and Maurice de Sully, to the home of the kings of France saved and restored by the local authorities of Saint-Denis and the Republic, come and rediscover the jewels of world Gothic architecture accompanied by one of our tour guides.
An exciting journey from the heritage of Saint-Benoit to the Archaeological Unit of the city of Saint-Denis!
The former royal abbey of Saint-Denis opens its doors to you for the European Heritage Days 2024!
Entirely rebuilt in the 18th century, since 1809 it has housed one of the educational establishments of the Legion of Honor, a boarding school for young girls founded by Napoleon I and attached to the Grand Chancellery of the Order.
Discover the main courtyard and abbey buildings - designed by architects Robert de Cotte, Jacques Gabriel and Charles Bonhomme - the cloister square with its three monumental staircases and formal garden, the chapel and refectory room - once the monks' refectory, now the high-school girls' refectory.
Canal, forts, railroads, freeways... These major infrastructures, built in the 19th and 20th centuries, divide up the Plaine Commune territory, often creating impassable borders for its inhabitants. Over the centuries, this territory has been structured around various "enclosures" or "barriers", linked in particular to the development of the city of Paris, and which largely explain its current physiognomy. However, from the advent of the Stade de France in 1998 to the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, public policies have been geared towards "stitching up" the region and (re)building bridges between its constituent cities. From the covering of the A1 motorway to the Pleyel Urban Crossing (FUP), via the new footbridges on the Saint-Denis canal, this bike tour led by guide Anouk Colombani will take you on a journey of discovery of this area, which has never ceased to face up to the major urban challenges of the 21st century.
Meeting point: Place Pleyel, next to the Velib station, 93200 Saint-Denis
For a long time, the building trades and architectural training were the preserve of men. It was only at the very beginning of the 20th century that the academic teaching of architecture finally opened up to women. Despite stereotypes, women often worked in agencies or in tandem with a man, gradually entering the field of construction and designing housing estates in particular. Juliette Tréant-Mathé, a pioneering architect in the 1930s, Renée Gailhoustet, winner of the Grand Prix national de l'architecture in 2022, Martine Deslandes and Maria Deroche in the 1970s and 1980s, all played their part in building sustainable cities. Get on your bike and ride through the towns of Aubervilliers, Epinay-sur-Seine, Saint-Denis and Villetaneuse with Hugo Trutt from the CAUE de Seine-Saint-Denis, to connect the architectural achievements of these female builders.
Visit carried out in partnership with the Conseil d'architecture, d'urbanisme et d'environnement de Seine-Saint-Denis (CAUE93).
Meeting point : Place Pleyel, next to the Velib station, 93200 Saint-Denis
Come aboard the T8 and meet a variety of cultural players and their projects! Since December 2014, the T8 tramway has linked Saint-Denis to Epinay-sur-Seine and Villetaneuse. With a length of 8.4 kilometers and a daily ridership of over 62,000, this line has transformed the towns' environment and landscape, and considerably improved their transport links. A number of cultural players are linked by this major transport axis: the DCA company, directed by choreographer Philippe Découflé, which has been based at La Chaufferie in Saint-Denis since the early 1990s; L'Autre Champ, an association created in 2012 in Villetaneuse, which promotes agro-ecology and cinema; and L'Abominable, a shared film laboratory which, since 2022, has been developing the Navire Argo project at Labos Eclair in Epinay-sur-Seine. Brice-Manuel Catala, the engineer who oversaw the project from A to Z, will take you on a walking tour of the tramway, providing you with an inexhaustible supply of anecdotes and stories about the construction site!
Meeting point: in front of the Novotel, 1 place de la porte de Paris, 93200 Saint-Denis.
As part of the 2024 European Heritage Days, discover this urban art trail along the Saint-Denis Canal, which now features more than 30 works of art featuring a wide variety of techniques and influences!
Stroll along the banks of the canal as artistic creations have been added to the Street Art Avenue urban art trail since 2016! An emblematic project accredited as part of the Cultural Olympiad by the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games Committee, you can enjoy frescoes from the project's beginnings, as well as those created more recently in 2024. This year, nine new national and international artists have contributed to embellishing the route: Rébus (France) - Place de L'Ecluse, Kashink (France) - Cité du Clos-Quentin, Insane 51 (Greece) - Cité du Clos-Quentin, Hera of Herakut (Germany) - Aubervilliers, Bust the Drip (France) - Aubervilliers, MJAY (France) - Quai Gambetta and Quai François Mitterrand, FD Crew (France) - Quai François Mitterrand, Mouad Aboulhana (Morocco) - Mur de la passerelle Pierre Larousse and Lady K (France) - Fronton du boulevard périphérique.
Saint-Denis town hall offers a tour of the town center, focusing on urban projects and ending with a visit to the town hall.
60adada
A contemporary art exhibition in a former grain mill
The present and the past brought together in a single venue
On the occasion of the 2024 European Heritage Days, the 60Adada association will open its doors with an art exhibition on the theme of identity, "Undress me my little buddha", featuring works by artists from the collective and from the four corners of the world.
Located in the historic center of Saint-Denis, just a stone's throw from the Basilica, 60Adada occupies part of a former grain mill dating from the early 20th century, and a more recent space with generous volumes.
For the past twenty years, 60Adada has been bringing together local artists and offering numerous artistic and cultural events throughout the year, and is in itself a cultural heritage for the public and for the city.
The exhibition:
It is part of a series of travelling contemporary art exhibitions that began in 2023 in South Korea, featuring artists of various nationalities and disciplines. At the invitation of Rainer Junghanns.
(https://www.raumfuerraum.net), creator of the project, 60Adada has been asked to host this large-scale project on its premises. Rainer Junghanns launched the "Raum fuer Raum" project in Düsseldorf (Germany), which took on a worldwide dimension with the "Global art project" trilogy. After the first two parts "HIDDEN_MESSAGES" and "NOMANSLAND.ACADEMY", the third and final part is "UNDRESS ME MY LITTLE B U D DH A". In this part of the "Undress me my little B U D D H A" project (this poetic title refers to two media images by Arthur Jafa and Rainer Junghanns), the aim is to reflect on the idea of the "real me", assuming that this "me" is ideally capable of expressing itself in various strategies of artistic self-discovery. This "self-discovery" in artistic creation can then be developed sociologically by assuming a particular role.
The event will bring together 27 artists, visual artists, photographers, video artists, performers, etc. from 60ADADA members and international guest artists already involved (Germany, Belgium, South Korea, Mexico, Taiwan, Japan, France (Saint Denis), etc.).
This major project is also an opportunity to discover the exceptional location of 60ADADA, an unusual space promoting the visual arts in the heart of the city of Saint Denis.

*A Fusion between the Art of Weaving and the Art of Upcycling.
Proposed by Amina Youcef Khodja.
This project promotes the social and solidarity economy by using the art of weaving from scraps of plastic bags and pieces of fabric. By transforming these recycled materials into utilitarian rugs, we merge the values of solidarity and ecological responsibility, thus contributing to sustainable development.
Demonstration steps:
Selecting materials: Choosing fabrics and colors for the final product.
Preparing materials: Preparing the pieces of fabric or plastic according to the weaving order.
Setting up the loom: Setting up the loom to create the basic weft.
Weaving: Weaving the pieces of fabric or plastic to create the final product.
The use of this craft as a vehicle for sustainable development is experiencing significant economic growth. It is particularly crucial in supporting precarious communities by offering economic opportunities and promoting an eco-responsible lifestyle.
Saturday September 21 and Sunday September 22, 2pm to 5pm:
*Artefact93 invites Franciade for the JEP24 to take part in an exceptional workshop entitled "Atelier Terre : Manipulation, Gravure et Moulage".
Led by visual artist Laurent Gongora and ceramist Louise Traon. Participants will have the opportunity to create a clay piece inspired by a medieval pilgrimage sign discovered in the alluvial deposits of the Croult river in Saint-Denis. In addition to the artistic creation, participants will be able to visit the Cygne island. The aim of this artistic project is to explore the history of pilgrimage signs and experiment with engraving and molding techniques.

Coming at 1:45 pm
Urban stroll led by Jean-Jacques Clément, from the association Mémoire vivante de la Plaine, on the theme of market garden production sites and associations of new urban cultures.
The Condorcet Campus, located to the south of this vast plain, was once one of the richest agricultural areas in France... In the early 19th century, the development of this land saw the arrival of market gardeners who for decades fed Paris and the surrounding area, one of their flagship products being the cabbage of virtues. Some street names bear witness to this agricultural past, such as rue des Gardinoux, an ancient word meaning "little garden". We'll walk along the Quai François Mitterrand to reach the Rue St Gobain.

Médiathèque du Centre-Ville
Dear investigators,
A library reader claims to have found a treasure thought lost: a musical score by the composer André Campra dating from 1740. He has hidden this treasure in the most valuable collections of Plaine Commune's media libraries, because unscrupulous thieves want to sell it for a high price.
Go in search of this forgotten score and hand it over to the appropriate authorities!
The downtown media library is the heir to a long history that began with the library of the Abbey of Saint-Denis. Since its creation in 1798, the library has collected over 100,000 documents, which are available to the public on request.
An original investigation devised by Mysteria Ingénium and co-hosted with the Plaine Commune media libraries.
Paul Éluard Museum of Art and History
Welcome to a "museum of words", under the auspices of Eluard, poet of love, commitment and play! Linguist Julien Barret offers a poetic stroll on the theme of the short form, from the Roman Empire to the punchlines of NTM. Comparing Dadas and Surrealist proverbs with sentences written on the Carmelite walls, visitors are invited to play with words.
Archaeologists from Inrap and the Archaeology Unit will present the results of excavations carried out on Place Jean Jaurès to the general public, in the form of a conference, at the Musée d'art et d'hsitoire Paul Eluard in Saint-Denis.
The Olympic and Paralympic Games bring together athletes and spectators from all over the world to share the thrill of surpassing oneself and breaking records, the jubilation of victory or the sadness of defeat. But what lies behind these moments? What are the conditions required to achieve these sporting performances? How do they engage the body and mind, and what do they say about our societies?
As part of the Cultural Olympiad, the exhibition at the Paul Eluard Museum of Art and History, organized by the City of Saint-Denis and the Department of Seine-Saint-Denis, opens up a number of poetic, scientific, offbeat and committed avenues to explore these issues.
This multidisciplinary exhibition brings together artists' views with historical works and ethnographic objects. It invites visitors to explore the museum's spaces in a new way, through a questioning of the athlete's body: trained, measured, cared for, augmented or mutilated, set up as a model or an object of worship. It shows the ambivalence of performance, between subjugation and surpassing oneself, and analyzes how the body in movement, through technical excellence, is a vector of affirmation, emancipation and even protest.
An audiovisual tour of the works, featuring the words of "great witnesses" (sportsmen and women, journalists, trainers, Carmelites, etc.), is linked to the themes of the exhibition and enriches and questions the works.
During the Heritage Days, the museum is open to visitors free of charge on Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 6:30pm.
Un petit opéra sportif
Based on "Le Forgeron" by Arthur Rimbaud
"I'd be a man, and you'd be king, You'd tell me: I want to!... - You see, it's stupid." Palais des Tuileries, circa August 10, 1792
On a fine summer's day, a Parisian blacksmith bursts into Louis XVI's apartments, opens wide the windows of the Palais des Tuileries and presents a pale king with the crowd of citizens in the courtyard shouting their desire for justice and peace. The king was speechless at the sight. From that day on, every year, the country and the whole world celebrate this day with joy!
In a language where lyricism and popular language are discovered and married, the Parisian worker narrates the sufferings of the people, the humiliations and injustices. With humor and irony, calm and tenderness, the blacksmith expresses the ambitions of his people: to bring about a just, peaceful and egalitarian society.

Cathedrals of Rail
Les Cathédrales du Rail, an exceptional railway heritage
Former SNCF repair workshops, now disused, the Cathédrales du Rail form a unique heritage site, bearing witness to the industrial past of Saint-Denis. Their rehabilitation is at the heart of a transformation project led by SNCF Immobilier, the City of Saint-Denis and Plaine Commune, and the consortium comprising Eiffage Aménagement and Aire Nouvelle, a subsidiary of Equans France.
Launched in 1874 by the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Nord, the La Plaine depot originally had a triple mission: to store and maintain steam freight locomotives, to serve marshalling yards, and to provide shunting services for passenger trains between the Gare du Nord station and the Landy maintenance workshops (now the Technicentre).

From hot bed cultivation to hydroponics, visitors are taken on a journey through the ages. It's all illustrated by a display of antique tools and vintage videos filmed by the Kersanté family. An exceptional testimonial.
La Ferme Ouverte offers you the opportunity to immerse yourself in an authentic and exotic setting.
Come and touch, feel and experience the farm with Les Fermes de Gally for an enchanted interlude!

The boiler room
The opening of La Chaufferie during the Journées Européennes du Patrimoine (European Heritage Days) will be an opportunity for the public in the Paris region to discover the creation site of Compagnie DCA, directed by choreographer Philippe Decouflé.
Built in 1952 by architect André Lurçat, this thermal plant was used for a long time to supply the town of Saint-Denis with heating. In 1993, at the invitation of Patrick Braouezec, then mayor of Saint-Denis, Philippe Decouflé and his dance company, DCA, took over the site, which had become obsolete. Major renovations were then undertaken to transform the large concrete cube into a choreographic creation box.
This atypical artistic space in Saint-Denis will be open to the public on Saturday September 21 from 2pm, for an original dance workshop led by two of the company's dancers!
