Located in Nogent-sur-Seine, in the house where Camille Claudel spent her formative years, the Musée Camille Claudel is a vibrant tribute to one of the most talented sculptors of the 19th century. A place of remembrance and celebration, it traces the artist's career and highlights her creative genius.
The museum showcases not only the sculptures of Camille Claudel, but also those of other artists of her era, such as Alfred Boucher and Auguste Rodin, highlighting the influences and collaborations that marked her career.
Among the museum's 300 treasures, some of Camille Claudel's most emblematic works are not to be missed. The sculpture "La Valse" is a true ode to passion and dance, while "La Petite Châtelaine" captures the innocence and vulnerability of a young girl. "L'Âge mûr", one of the artist's most poignant works, evokes pain and resignation in the face of the passage of time.
Other masterpieces include "Les Causeuses", which delicately illustrates an intimate conversation between two women, and "Persée et la Gorgone", a dynamic and expressive work. The museum also features sketches and terracotta works, offering a glimpse into Claudel's creative process.
Throughout the Journées du Patrimoine 2024 weekend, visitors can enjoy flash tours of the permanent collections and the temporary exhibition "Camille Claudel à l'œuvre : Sakountala". On the occasion of the 160th anniversary of Camille Claudel's birth, the museum honors the artist with one of her major works: Sakountala.
This sculpture, the only one to win her an award at the Salon, is a thread that traces the artist's career, based in particular on the variations she proposed, under different titles and in various formats and materials: from L'Abandon to La Niobide blessée, via Vertumne and Pomone.
The exhibition looks back at the patient development of the work and the turbulent history of its reception, as well as the choice of this myth from ancient Indian literature, in vogue in the 19th century, which gives Sakountala its strength and originality.
