The coronavirus epidemic keeps on spreading across the world. These past few days, it is in China that the number of cases turns up. In Beijing, 27 new contaminations have been reported on June 16, 2020 in 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 106 people.
A resurgence of the virus that came from the Xinfadi market, one of the biggest markets in Asia, when dozens of thousands of tons of food and people outside the city run around. So, after the sudden resurgence of the virus, authorities have shut the market this past Saturday, as well as four other markets in Beijing, partially or totally.
Other restrictive measures have been set up as well. The city of Beijing is running tests and inhabitants are monitored closely. Last but not least, students in primary schools and junior high schools now have to start classes from home again.
Should we fear a new epidemic wave?
This brutal change of situation, with the resurgence of about a hundred new cases raise many questions. Should we fear a second epidemic wave?
The World Health Organization (WHO) said this Monday they were thoroughly monitoring the situation in China, and if need be, the organization is ready to send new experts to Beijing in the next days in case of a second wave. Pitié-Salpétrière infectirous disease unit head Eric Caumes said on BFM: “What’s interesting is to see how quick Chinese authorities react with such little cases, it’s impressive”. So far, authorities remain vigilant because the virus keeps on spreading and has not been wiped out yet.
