All year round, a veritable shower of shooting stars graces our skies, during a few well-defined periods in advance. In November 2023, you'll be able to observe the Leonids in the skies above Paris, sheltered from light pollution. But the weather has to be kind, as it's been raining for the past few weeks! The Perseids are much easier to see in the middle of August, but those in November are different.
This exceptional celestial phenomenon will be visible in French skies until the end of the month, peaking on Friday November 17, 2023. But you'll have to earn it and be patient, as the number of shooting stars is smaller than for others, with only 15 shooting stars per hour. So you also have to rely a little on luck! Although there aren't many of them, they do have one special feature this year: according to NASA, they're going to be colorful!
This swarm of Leonids originates from a cluster of dust left behind by comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle. Very fast, they reach speeds of 71 kilometers per second! Turn east to see it, in the constellation Leo, from midnight, ideally on high ground or outside urban areas.
If you don't see any, you can try again next month with the Geminids, which are much more numerous!
