It's an emotional time for the four-legged residents, employees and volunteers of the SPA de Gennevilliers. This shelter, considered to be the oldest of the Société Protectrice des Animaux, is leaving its historic premises on avenue du Général de Gaulle to move to a new location, still in Gennevilliers in the Hauts-de-Seine department. The new facility will open to the public on November 7, 2024.

For more than 5 decades, the SPA has occupied the premises at 30 avenue du Général de Gaulle in Gennevilliers. After more than 50 years of loyal service, the refuge de Gennevilliers, also known as the refuge de Grammont, is closing its doors and moving to a new site. " Three times larger than the current site, it will be among the most innovative in Europe in terms of animal welfare," explains the SPA in a post published on its social networks.

In the meantime, dogs, cats and NACs (new pet animals) are being transferred from the current site to the new shelter, located around 1.5 km away. As reported in Le Parisien, 250 animals - 80 dogs, 160 cats and a dozen NACs - were transferred to the new facility in just three days.

All these animals will be joining the SPA 's new shelter, " offering all the comfort they need ", says the association. Located at N°117 avenue Marcel Paul, the new shelter is due to open its doors to the public and potential adopters on November 7, 2024, just long enough for the little four-legged fur balls to find their feet.

A new refuge in a greener space

It took three years to build the brand-new shelter. A much-needed new structure for the animals and the staff who worked there. The Gennevilliers shelter, opened in 1973, was the Société Protectrice des Animaux's oldest. Over time, and despite successive renovations, the premises had become dilapidated and were no longer suited to the heavy influx of visitors and the intake of abandoned animals.

A new page has been turned for the SPA with the opening of this new facility in a greener setting in the heart of the inner suburbs. " We've made real progress on the issue of animal welfare. The animals will benefit from much more space in the indoor and outdoor boxes ," explained Twiggy Sailly, head of the Gennevilliers shelter, in an article published on the SPA website.

The construction of this new shelter was also based on the ecological dimension, with, for example, the creation of a rainwater retention basin for washing and watering, and the installation of photovoltaic panels. Last but not least, the new Gennevilliers shelter has an educational vocation, to help everyone discover the missions of the SPA and the needs of the animals.

" In total, nearly 144 dogs, 200 cats and 20 NACs (new pets) will be taken in on the new site," says the SPA. See you on November 7, 2024 to push open the doors of the new SPA de Gennevilliers shelter.
