Another Fête de la musique! Every year, this popular and festive event celebrates live music with free concerts all over France.
How did the Fête de la Musique come about? In 1982, a major survey of French cultural practices revealed that five million people, including one young person in two, played a musical instrument, whereas the musical events organized up to that point only concerned a minority of French people. With this in mind, Jack Lang, Minister of Culture at the time, Christian Dupavillon, architect and scenographer, and Maurice Fleuret, appointed Director of Music and Dance in 1981, came up with the idea of a major popular event designed to give all musicians a chance to express themselves and make themselves known. The very first Fête de la Musique took place on June 21, 1982, the symbolic day of the summer solstice.
More than 40 years later, the traditional Fête de la Musique continues to make people happy every June 21, thanks to its rich and eclectic musical program. So what can we expect this year? While there's no shortage of good music deals in Paris, there's also plenty to choose from elsewhere in the Île-de-France region.
In the Yvelines department, for example, Versailles is once again taking part in this popular and festive event, with a not-to-be-missed evening of free concerts on Friday June 21, 2024 in several locations around the city, including the garden of the Musée Lambinet.
