It's the biggest garden you'llfind in the 13th arrondissement: and with good reason, the Parc Kellerman is a particularly popular spot for sports enthusiasts, joggers, walkers and families. Ideal for a leisurely stroll in a particularly green setting, it also features a number of play areas and, for the past few years, an educational farm with chickens, rabbits and other farmyard animals.
Originating in the 1930s, the park was created following the destruction of Thiers' former fortifications after the First World War: the most notable feature of these fortifications was their uselessness during the 1870 war between France and Prussia. The park is named after Christophe Kellerman, one of the two victors of the Battle of Valmy against the Prussians in 1792. In 1925, a vast redevelopment project was launched to turn the park into a green gem at the gateway to Paris, in the13th arrondissement, not far from the emblematic Porte de Choisy and Porte d'Ivry districts.
As you pass through the gate at the main entrance, you're greeted by a pretty French garden: in spring, this is where you can admire the colorful flowerbeds and take photos all year round on the garden bench. Then it's up to you to get in some exercise on the purpose-built sports facilities: tennis courts, a soccer pitch and a fit park for push-ups, pull-ups and other body-building exercises are just waiting for you!
A little further down thebucolic staircase among the trees, you'll find beautiful lawns, with the highlight of the show being a water basin filled with plants and fish. Numerous benches are also to be found throughout the park: if the lawns are a little damp, they are ideal for taking a lunch break, having a snack, meeting up with friends... The park is criss-crossed by a river on three levels of gardens in total, offering a nature getaway for young and old in the heart of Paris.
