Directed by Chloé Zhao, Oscar-winner for Nomadland, The Eternals takes us into the spectacular world of Marvel superheroes, adding unprecedented depth to films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Starring Gemma Chan, Richard Madden and Salma Hayek, this cosmic adventure blends science fiction, action and mythology to tell the story of a group of immortal heroes, the Eternals. Created to protect the Earth for thousands of years, these mystical beings must now face a threat from the past: the Deviants, creatures whose brutality could wipe out humanity.
Les Éternels will be broadcast on Disney+ from November 8, 2024.
Synopsis: Since the dawn of mankind, the Eternals, a group of heroes from the far reaches of the universe, have been protecting the Earth. When the Deviants, monstrous creatures long thought extinct, mysteriously reappear, the Eternals are once again forced to join forces to defend humanity...
Les Éternels should appeal to fans of superhero and sci-fi films who appreciate epic adventures and large-scale universes. Its direction by Chloé Zhao could also attract an audience less familiar with Marvel films, curious to discover a more personal and emotional interpretation of the genre. This film could appeal to viewers of Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, or even fans of mythology revisited, looking for a visually spectacular approach blending action with questions about immortality and duty to humanity. Fans of special effects and choreographed combat will find plenty to enjoy here, although the film also seems to explore the intimate links between the characters and their relationship to Earth.
Carried by a renowned international cast, The Eternals marks a turning point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by introducing never-before-seen characters whose impact on human history is colossal. The diversity of the Eternals group could make this a unique film in terms of its varied portrayals, while also broadening Marvel's themes. Zhao and his team of scriptwriters drew inspiration from the great mythological frescoes, which should give an epic dimension to the relationship between the Eternals and their millennia-old enemies, the Deviants.
With a unique aesthetic and themes exploring responsibility and loyalty through the prism of fantasy, The Eternals promises to be a cinematic experience unlike any other in the Marvel universe. This film could captivate those looking for a grandiose escape, while delighting Marvel fans by delving deeper into the history of this universe rich in heroes and mythology. The Eternals promises to be a must-see addition for fans of cosmic storytelling and epic adventure.
Our review of The Eternals:
The Eternals is a film with a gripping story, far removed from what Marvel Studios usually offers via its connected universe. A film that stands out from the crowd, making only one or two references to the MCU (just enough to point out that the story of this film is linked to the rest), and proposing an original story, so far removed from the rest that those who haven't followed the story of the previous Marvel Studios films won't be left out in any way.
But what really makes this film stand out is its photography! After Nomadland and its breathtaking images, Chloé Zhao repeats the feat here, thanks to her cinematographer Ben Davis, with a film featuring striking wide shots. Magnificent, grandiose landscapes play on the contrast with man, ever smaller in this vast universe. It's beautiful, and that's all we ask! Special mention goes to Angelina Jolie, in the role of Thena, a surprisingly multi-layered character who gains in depth as the film progresses.
On the other hand, we regret a certain lack of ambition in the script. Working to strict specifications, Chloé Zhao seems to hold back in her storytelling, as evidenced by the acting of certain actors ( Richard Madden springs to mind...) who also hold back in their emotions and in their interactions with the other characters. Some of the characters also deserve to be fleshed out, and only become useful to the plot towards the end of the film, bringing new density, certainly, but to the detriment of the rest of the film. Nonetheless, The Eternals is a good piece of entertainment, certainly not revolutionary, but one that should please Marvel fans.
