Directed by the talented Luca Guadagnino, known for his acclaimed work Call Me By Your Name, Bones and All delves into a mixed genre combining drama, horror and romance. Starring Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell, who made a name for herself in Escape Game, the film takes viewers on an intense and disturbing journey across the United States. The screenplay, written by David Kajganich, explores themes of alienation and love in extreme circumstances. Bones and All, makes its debut in the Prime Video catalog this Tuesday, April 23, 2024, the day before the theatrical release of Challengers, the Italian director's latest feature.
Bones and All follows the story of Maren, a young girl in search of her mother, who crosses paths with Lee, a rebellious and enigmatic teenager. Together, they embark on a road trip through deepest America, a journey as passionate as it is disturbing. As their love grows, they must face up to their dark secrets: they are both cannibals. Will this journey be enough to overcome the obstacles of their nature and social rejection?
The film is clearly aimed at a mature audience, and is in fact forbidden to under-16s, and fascinated by tales where horror blends with raw emotion. The performances of Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell should attract fans of these young talents, as well as fans of horror films and unconventional romances. The originality of Bones and All lies in its treatment of cannibalism not only as a metaphor for otherness, but also as a prism through which to explore themes of identity, love and exclusion.
Bones and All promises an intense and disturbing cinematic experience, combining Guadagnino's trademark visual beauty with an unsettling love story. The performances of Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell are pivotal in this convention-defying tale, making this film a must-see for those looking to explore the boundaries of love and horror. Available on Prime Video since April 23, 2024, this film is a bold and visceral exploration of the human condition.
Our opinion on Bones and All:
Bones and All takes us to the heart of a captivating love story between two young outsiders in search of an identity, who feel misunderstood and abandoned by society. Set against the backdrop of a road trip through the heart of '80s America, the two protagonists meet, size each other up, recognize each other and abandon themselves to each other.
Lucas Guadagnino has created endearing characters despite the horrors they comment on! The viewer is worried about what might happen to them! We quickly fall in love with them and want to protect them and help them face their demons. Timothée Chalamet, already Oscar-nominated for his role in Call Me By Your Name, is one of the few actors capable of expressing both innocence and torment, while anchoring the story in reality. This characteristic is found in films such as My Beautiful Boy and Lady Bird.
Finally, Bones and All is one of those films that makes you wonder! Maren's father loves her and does everything to protect her, but she's different and he realizes that despite everything he's sacrificed to help and support her, he can't do anything for her. In the end, he abandons her, offering her the chance to find her mother, who he believes can help her understand who she is.
On the director's side, the eerie metallic music and polished images of vast, cold, bare landscapes keep the viewer on the edge of their seats right up to the final denouement.
