Do you rememberOrelsan 's film Comment c'est loin? Grand Paris is more or less based on the same premise, but is even crazier and more off-the-wall. It's the story of two guys, a bit lazy and, above all, unemployed, who go in search of the origin of a mysterious artifact they find on the Grand Paris Express construction site. Scheduled for cinema release on March 29.
For a first film, it's a great success. Grand Paris is the adaptation of Grand Paris Express, a short film directed by Martin Jauvat with the same team. For the full-length version, he returns behind and in front of the camera, playing Renard, a young suburbanite who embarks his best pal Leslie on a dodgy scheme at the other end of the Île-de-France region. Throughout their adventure, they come across a number of colorful personalities, as well as an idiotic and hilarious drug dealer/sandwich delivery man, played by the brilliant William Lebghil.
And even technically, the film is surprising. Shot with a luminous, sometimes even milky colorimetry, it's a little reminiscent of Quentin Dupieux's films. Whether it's the hyper-serious soundtrack or the increasingly mysterious events that unfold around the two friends, it's clear that Grand Paris is far from an American-stylestoner movie. On the contrary, under the guise of the absurd wanderings of two morons, Martin Jauvat has created a very clever film, presenting a vision of the suburbs that has never been seen before in French cinema. At just 26 years of age, the young man is establishing himself as a very promising filmmaker, one to watch. We can't wait to see what direction his career takes.
