The Haunted Mansion (2023), based on Disneyland's iconic attraction, blends adventure, comedy and fantasy in a captivating family film.

With The Haunted Mansion, director Justin Simien revisits one of the Disneyland parks' most famous attractions, giving it a new life on the silver screen. This feature-length film skilfully blends adventure, comedy and fantasy to tell a story where humor and thrills intertwine. Featuring a colorful cast including Lakeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish and Owen Wilson, this film promises an immersive experience as entertaining as it is intriguing. Designed for the whole family, it invites viewers into a mansion where ghosts aren't as scary as they seem.

Where and when can you see The Haunted Mansion in France?

The Haunted Mansion will be broadcast on Disney+ from December 27, 2024.

Synopsis: Based on the legendary Disneyland attraction, THE HAUNTED MANOR tells the story of a mother and son who hire a team of pseudo-experts to help them hunt down the various ghosts and spectres haunting their home.

Like Pirates of the Caribbean, here's a new adaptation of one of Disneyland's most popular attractions. The film, directed by Justin Simien, comes twenty years after the first adaptation, The Haunted Mansion and the 999 Ghosts, starring Eddie Murphy. The cast also includes Rosario Dawson, Jamie Lee Curtis and Jared Leto.

The Haunted Mansion is primarily aimed at families with children aged 10 and over, as well as fans of films where humor and fantasy coexist harmoniously. Fans of the Disneyland parks will find plenty of references to the original attraction, while viewers looking for light entertainment will appreciate the humor and outlandish situations.

With its mix of chills and laughter, the film is reminiscent of other works in the same genre, such as The Haunted Mansion Adventurers and Ghostbusters. The quirky tone and chemistry between the characters, played by renowned actors such as Tiffany Haddish and Owen Wilson, add a modern touch to this adaptation.

However, viewers looking for more intense horror films or complex fantasy tales may find the tone too light or geared towards younger audiences.

With The Haunted Mansion, Disney offers a fantastic and humorous adventure that will appeal to both nostalgic fans of the attraction and fans of light-hearted family tales. Boasting a brilliant cast and dynamic direction, this film offers an entertaining retelling of an amusement park classic, blending the supernatural with comedy for a cinematic experience accessible to all.

Our review of The Haunted Mansion:

Creaking doors, terrifying paintings, cobwebs on the ceiling - there's no doubt about it, Disney's Haunted Mansion is here to make us shiver. And if you're a fan of the Disneyland attraction, you'll see many similarities. But both are aimed at a very young audience. Because yes, this isn't a horror film per se, but rather a thrill-filled comedy parodying the horror genre. And if you're past your pre-teen years, The Haunted Mansion is unlikely to scare you. In fact, it may be a good gateway to horror cinema for younger viewers. On the other hand, it's decent family entertainment, with a nice moral about grief.

Nevertheless, that's about it, and a fussy audience will find it easier to overlook the film's shortcomings. In trying to stick as closely as possible to the story of the origin of the Haunted House, the film puts storytelling aside and turns its set-up into a filmed attraction. Horrific situations are more often a labyrinth to escape from, with a whole host of ghosts along the way, than a real threat. What's more, the CGI effects aren't particularly exciting, and tend to take us out of the film rather than make us believe in the monsters. This is particularly true of the big bad, played by Jared Leto (completely transformed by the CGI), whose design is unrecognizable and unsuccessful.
