Multi-award-winning director Pablo Berger offered us a unique cinematic experience with Mon Ami Robot(Robot Dream). This adaptation of the comic strip by American author-illustrator Sara Varon was presented as a special children's screening at the Cannes 2023 Festival.
In a world populated by animals, where loneliness can be overcome by the creation of robots, we meet Dog, a New York dog in search of friendship. He befriends Robot, and together they share moments of complicity, playing video games and strolling through Central Park. Their friendship quickly becomes unbreakable. However, during a trip to the beach, Robot finds himself rusted and immobilized in the sand, forcing Dog to return to his solitary life.
Over the seasons, Dog tries to fill the emotional void left by the loss of his friend through brief friendships, but no bond can replace Robot's presence. For his part, Robot finds solace in dreaming and recalling happy times spent with Dog. Despite the obstacles, hope persists for the two friends, who long to meet again one day.
Mon Ami Robot is an animated film imbued with poetry and musicality. It marks Pablo Berger's first step into this genre, having already won awards for his work, notably with Blancanieves. The story explores the themes of friendship, its importance and fragility, and promises to offer viewers of all ages a touching emotional experience.
With carefully crafted animation and a captivating story, Robot Dreams transports viewers into an enchanting world where animals and robots live side by side, and friendship transcends barriers. Pablo Berger's direction, combined with a sensitive adaptation of Sara Varon's work, promises to touch hearts and inspire young and old alike.
