Bread and Roses, a documentary by Afghan filmmaker Sahra Mani. Produced by Jennifer Lawrence and Justine Ciarrocchi under the banner of their company Excellent Cadaver, the film traces the experience of Afghan women living under the yoke of the Taliban since they took control of Kabul in August 2021.
The documentary focuses on the catastrophic situation of women's rights in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime. Access to education, employment and public spaces has been brutally suppressed, and women are particularly hard hit by the deterioration of the Afghan economy.
Bread and Roses is described as a non-politicized tale of resilience, offering a raw, unfiltered depiction of the female condition in Afghanistan. The film follows three women determined to regain their autonomy, and tells their stories from their own perspective.
This isExcellent Cadaver 's third production and their first documentary, following Causeway and the comedy No Hard Feelings. Director Sahra Mani fled Afghanistan when the Taliban took power in 2021 and now lives in Europe. Her previous works include the documentary A Thousand Girls Like Me (2019) about a young Afghan woman seeking justice after years of sexual abuse by her father. The film was screened at several festivals, including HotDocs, Sheffield and IDFA.
At the time of the fall of Kabul, Mani was also working on the documentary Kabul Melody, about an avant-garde music school where boys and girls studied together. This project had to be rethought after the school was destroyed by the Taliban.
