Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 propels Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise, on his most perilous mission to date. Supported by an impressive cast, including Hayley Atwell and Ving Rhames, he confronts a technological threat capable of upsetting the global balance.
With its spectacular chases, complex plots and breathtaking action scenes, this chapter follows in the footsteps of the most ambitious spy films. With settings that take us to the four corners of the globe, this installment explores not only current geopolitical issues, but also the personal struggles of a hero ready to sacrifice everything for his mission.
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 will be available on Paramount+ from December 12, 2024.
Synopsis: In Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1, Ethan Hunt and his IMF team embark on their most perilous mission yet: to track down a fearsome new weapon before it falls into the wrong hands and threatens all humanity. Control of the future and the fate of the world are at stake. As the dark forces of his past resurface, Ethan embarks on a deadly race around the globe. Confronted by a powerful and enigmatic enemy, Ethan realizes that nothing can stand above his mission - not even the lives of those he loves.
This seventh installment in the Mission: Impossible saga will appeal to fans of action, suspense and espionage. Fans of films like James Bond or Jason Bourne will appreciate the balance between spectacular sequences and a more psychological plot. With Tom Cruise still at the top of his game, the film promises to delight those looking for daring stunts and a breathtaking story.
What sets this installment apart is the more intimate exploration of Ethan Hunt's dilemmas, as he confronts his past while pursuing a mission that puts the future of humanity at stake. If viewers prefer lighter action films or those devoid of narrative complexity, they may find this chapter intense.
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 is the first part of a diptych that will mark an epic conclusion to the franchise. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, also behind the previous two installments, the film focuses on universal themes of sacrifice, loyalty and the quest for redemption. The filming was marked by some impressive stunts performed by Tom Cruise himself, including a motorcycle jump off a cliff that will go down in the annals of action cinema.
With Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1, the saga continues to push back the boundaries of action cinema. Between a captivating plot, intense performances and breathtaking action scenes, this film is a must-see experience for spy and adrenaline fans.
Our opinion on Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1
The Mission: Impossible saga may seem highly formatted, but each opus has its own identity. For a long time, this was thanks to the succession of renowned authors (in the first four opuses), each with their own distinctive style. Since the fifth installment, Christopher McQuarrie has been at the helm, carrying out all the wishes of producer Tom Cruise, who wants to push the boundaries of the spectacular ever further.
Yet, surprisingly, this Dead Reckoning starts off in the opposite direction to all its predecessors. Gone is the big introductory action scene, and this new adventure starts calmly enough, taking its time to set out the stakes. You have to wait almost 45 minutes before witnessing the first spectacular action sequence. Yes, the film is long - 2 hours 40 minutes- the longest of the saga, and that's just the first part! But don't worry, it's never boring - on the contrary, we'd love more!
As usual, the script is mostly a pretext for grand spectacle, but to cut a long story short, Ethan Hunt is back, and this time, his mission (if he accepts it) is to find the key that will enable him to take control of a super artificial intelligence, so powerful that whoever tames it could well rule the whole world. And in the mad race our heroes set off on, they are pursued by three very distinct groups, many of whom want to stand in their way. Whether in Rome, Abu Dhabi or aboard the Orient Express, Ethan Hunt is chasing the clock and Tom Cruise is having the time of his life, with ever more spectacular stunts.
It's rhythmic, generous, sometimes funny, often tragic, and always impressive. We regret that the Cruise/McQuarrie duo are keeping too much under wraps for Part 2, which we imagine will be even more explosive. This seventh installment ticks all the boxes, and does it well. But perhaps we expected it to go a little further.
