She was an American artist who left her mark on the history of music, but also more broadly on American society through her many battles; whether against war or in favor of civil rights with Martin Luther King. Joan Baez gave her very last concert in Paris (at theOlympia) in February 2019, in front of an audience of fans overwhelmed by the voice of this great artist, and by her many ballads that still resonate in our heads. A few months later, in July to be precise, Joan Baez gave her very last concert in Madrid, 60 years after her performance at the Newport Folk Festival, which brought her to the attention of the general public.
Despite her retirement from the stage, the woman nicknamed by many " the Queen of Folk " or " the Barefoot Madonna " made a comeback in 2023 with the release of a musical documentary, to be seen on Arte on December 6, 2024. Called " Joan Baez I Am A Noise ", or " Joan Baez : À voix haute " in French, the film is directed by Miri Navasky, Maeve O'Boyle and Karen O'Connor, and co-produced by Patti Smith. Over the course of 113 minutes, the documentary combines footage of Joan Baez from her farewell tour in 2019, with personal archives, tracing the artist's life over the course of her 60-year career, her heartbreaking romance with the young Bob Dylan and her many struggles.
For, in addition to being an artist in her own right, Joan Baez is also a committed singer. For example, she has not hesitated to take part in numerous events: civil rights marches on Washington, anti-segregation demonstrations in Alabama... These are just some of the battles that have made Joan Baez such an endearing and respected artist, and an example for many other artists to follow.
This immersive documentary, a real journey through time, is an opportunity to discover more about the life and career of this immense artist with such a singular voice. " Joan Baez : À voix haute " is not to be missed on Arte this Friday, December 6, 2024 in the second half of the evening, from 10:30pm.
