Attention fans of the late, talented Cesária Évora. As of Wednesday November 29, 2023, fans of the illustrious singer, who died in 2011 at the age of 70, will have a date at the cinema to discover the documentary"Cesária Évora, la diva aux pieds nus" (Cesária Évora, the barefoot diva).
Directed by Ana Sofia Fonseca, the film retraces the life of the Cape Verdean artist, who became internationally popular in 1992 thanks to her sublime song " Sodade ". At the time, she was 51 years old. A radical change for the Cape Verdean singer who had long been a simple bar singer. Before becoming the legend she is today, Cesária Évora had to face many trials and tribulations. The documentary"Cesária Évora, la diva aux pieds nus" (Cesária Évora, the barefoot diva) traces the struggles and excesses, but also the successes, of the Cape Verdean singer.
From her difficult childhood to decades of poverty, during which the artist sank into alcohol and depression, the documentary also evokes her late success and international influence thanks to her music, to the point of becoming the Queen of Morna.
Through never-before-seen archive footage, including personal footage, as well as original song recordings and unique testimonials from those close to the artist,"Cesária Évora, la diva aux pieds nus" paints a portrait of this deeply committed and generous woman.
