Julie Delpy returns to directing with Les Barbares, a promising comedy that tackles the themes of solidarity and prejudice. In addition to writing and directing the film, Julie Delpy stars alongside Sandrine Kiberlain and Laurent Lafitte. Julie Delpy, known for her roles in Avant le lever du jour and 2 Days in Paris, offers here a work that promises to be as piquant as it is moving. Sandrine Kiberlain, seen in 9 Mois Ferme, and Laurent Lafitte, famous for his role in Papa ou Maman, complete this choice casting.
Les Barbares is released on VOD for purchase on January 16 and for rental on January 22, 2025.
Synopsis: In Paimpont, harmony reigns: among the inhabitants, there's Joëlle - the schoolteacher with a penchant for giving lessons, Anne - the owner of the convenience store with a penchant for aperitifs, Hervé - the Alsatian plumber who's more Breton than the Bretons, and Johnny - the village warden who's a fan of... Johnny. In a show of solidarity, they enthusiastically agree to vote to welcome Ukrainian refugees. Except that the refugees arriving aren't Ukrainian... they're Syrian! And some people in this charming little Breton village don't take too kindly to the arrival of their new neighbors. So, at the end of the day, who are the barbarians?
Les Barbares targets a wide audience, from fans of French comedies to viewers interested in social films. Julie Delpy's unique touch, combining humor and societal reflection, promises to set this film apart from other comedies. Those who enjoyed films like Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis and Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait au Bon Dieu? will probably find Les Barbares just as entertaining and relevant. The film may surprise with its delicate approach to questions of integration and tolerance, while maintaining a light, accessible tone.
With Les Barbares, Julie Delpy delivers an intelligent, topical comedy exploring the reactions of a small community to the arrival of refugees. Supported by a talented cast, the film promises to be both funny and touching, while offering a reflection on welcome and prejudice.
