Oscars 2025: 4 films shortlisted to represent France - The Count of Monte Cristo in the lead

The CNC has unveiled four films shortlisted to represent France at the 2025 Oscars, including The Count of Monte Cristo, in theaters for eleven weeks.

France is preparing its selection for the 2025 Oscars. Among the four films shortlisted by the Centre national du cinéma(CNC), Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte's adaptation of the famous novel Le Comte de Monte-Cristo figures prominently. This feature film, which has already sold over 8 million tickets, stars Pierre Niney as Edmond Dantès. Jacques Audiard 's musical Emilia Pérez , which won awards at the Cannes Film Festival, features an impressive cast including Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Karla Sofía Gascón.

The other two shortlisted films are All We Imagine as Light by Indian director Payal Kapadia, a successful social chronicle, and Miséricorde,Alain Guiraudie 's rural thriller starring Catherine Frot. On September 18, a further meeting of the CNC commission will determine the final candidate to represent France in the prestigious Best International Film category at the Oscars 2025.

This pre-selection is distinguished by the variety of its genres: from historical drama to musical comedy, thrillers to social chronicles, offering a fine showcase for French cinema on the international scene.
