Adapted from the famous comic strip by Albert Uderzo and René Goscinny, Asterix and Obelix vs. Caesar marks the first live-action foray into the adventures of Gaul's most famous duo. Directed by Claude Zidi, one of the great names in French comedy, the film combines humor, adventure and historical folklore, in a spectacular production designed for a family audience. The cast features well-known figures from French cinema, with Christian Clavier as Asterix and Gérard Depardieu as Obelix, accompanied by Italian actor Roberto Benigni as the villainous Detritus.
Asterix and Obelix vs Caesar will be broadcast on TF1 on Monday, April 7, 2025 at 9:10pm.
Synopsis: Still resisting the invaders, the inhabitants of a small village in Armorica defy Caesar by seizing the tax collected for the benefit of Rome.
Designed to appeal to a wide audience, the film's accessible humor and shared cultural references will appeal to both comic-book nostalgics and young viewers aged 8 and over. Fans of family comedies will find the classic ingredients of the genre: visual gags, repeated puns and cartoonish but endearing characters. The universe, faithful to that of the albums, with its Gallic village, clumsy Roman soldiers and magic potion, offers colorful, fast-paced entertainment.
This film could appeal to fans of classic French comedy from the 90s, as well as those who appreciate comic strip adaptations. It may also recall works such as Les Visiteurs for Christian Clavier's humor, or Le Corniaud for its burlesque spirit. On the other hand, viewers looking for historical realism or dramatic subtlety may find this film too light or cartoonish.
Asterix and Obelix vs. Caesar, with its iconic duo, grandiose sets and good-natured tone, is a classic French comic-book comedy. An ideal opportunity to (re)discover the Gaulish village that continues to resist the invaders, in a version designed to bring the whole family together in front of the screen.
