After two hours watching this La Traviata – You deserve a better future, we can tell you that Benjamin Lazar changed our lives a little. In the sublime setting of the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, of which the aspect is uncleared, has never been so much promoted. Adeline Caron’s sets are of an absolute romanticism.
Everything starts under an immense veil that falls from the ceiling, like a mist and under which characters move, their faces lightened with flashlights, then, the stage empties and turns into a garden full of flower bouquets, reminding of the countryside like an actress’ dressing room. It finally transforms in a party location lightened up with neon lights where the lovers’ sadness has never been so pale.
This first visual exploit, that pleases all through the show is accompanied by a modern play. Musicians comes on the stage, like characters and sometimes bring unintended humor with their violins. Sometimes, singers escape from the stage to sing in the corridors, then, the whole theater is inhabited. The main character of this moved Traviata, love, floats in the air and materialized in smoke.
Actress and singer Judith Chemla also took part in creating the show of which she is the diamond. Stunning in her see-through green dress, charming when she unsheathes and poignant when she is in love, she gives La Traviata a crystal-like voice that vibrates like a tear. Unforgettable.
