The Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris is organizing a major retrospective dedicated to Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli. This multi-talented artist has always defended her freedom, establishing herself as anavant-garde figure. Costumes, accessories, photographs, perfume bottles, jewelry, sculptures... Come and discover all the creations of this boundless artist, from July 6, 2022 to January 22, 2023, with the exhibition Shocking! The Surreal Worlds of Elsa Schiaparelli.
The Musée des Arts Décoratifs has staged 520 works, including 272 costumes and fashion accessories. The exhibition is enriched by paintings, sculptures, jewelry, perfume bottles, ceramics, posters and photographs signed by the greatest names of the period, from Man Ray to Salvador Dalí, from Jean Cocteau to Meret Oppenheim and Elsa Triolet.
Elsa Schiaparelli enjoyed herself for 25 years, creating collections and works that were always surprising and innovative, yet always faithful to the artist's personality. Passionate about art, Elsa Schiaparelli drew inspiration from the great painters, sculptors and photographers, building bridges between disciplines to create unique designs.
Rejecting codes and habits, she made haute couture her playground, appropriating varied styles such as evening gowns, streetwear, sportswear, accessories and perfumes.
The exhibition showcases her remarkable and revolutionary collections, as well as her surprising collaborations, through an immersive and spectacular scenography. Hundreds of the artist's drawings and sketches are on display, tracing his awakening to fashion and haute couture.
Art deco, Salvador Dali, Elsa Triolet, Jean Cocteau, Man Ray: all the movements and artists of her time inspired her and let themselves be inspired by her. She pays particular attention to detail, borrowing her humorous touches from the surrealist movement. She let her passions speak for themselves in her creations, inventing collections around Italian Antiquity, nature and music.
The Musée des Arts Décoratifs also surprises us by reconstructing Elsa Schiaparelli's couture salons, then located at 21 Place Vendôme in Paris, as part of the exhibition. All the world's extravagant women passed through these salons, calling on the couturier to help them stand out from the crowd. One ofElsa Schiaparelli's most recent creations, a dress worn by Lady Gaga to President Joe Biden's inauguration, is on display at the museum on loan from the singer.
The exhibition also features a number of photos that bear witness to the great friendships and professional collaborations that have marked the artist's career and life. The exhibition stimulates all our senses, with a presentation of the perfumes she worked on.
Of course, it's impossible to talk about this fashion icon without highlighting some of her most famous silhouettes. This rich, modern, abundant and unexpected exhibition is in the image of the designer. A fine tribute to be discovered without delay!
