Paris is set to celebrate the graphic and literary magic of Posy Simmonds with the must-seeexhibition, Posy Simmonds: Dessiner la littérature, at the BPI, Centre Pompidou from November 22, 2023 to April 1, 2024. Organized in close collaboration with the artist, the event will highlight the depth and diversity of her prolific career, from press cartoons to graphic novels, not forgetting her remarkable children's albums.
The exhibition route offers a deep immersion into the world of Posy Simmonds, beginning with her childhood drawings, student sketches and the literary influences that shaped her distinctive style. She quickly made a name for herself at the Guardian, humorously depicting English cultured society through sharp caricatures and iconic characters who would later evolve into the protagonists of her graphic novels.
At the heart of this retrospective are his daringly modern tales for young people, as well as such landmark works as Gemma Bovery (1999), Tamara Drewe (2007) and Cassandra Darke (2018). To complete the circle, the exhibition concludes with an epilogue featuring his drawings relating to the literary world, his more recent works, and his drawings connected with France.
The essence of Posy Simmonds ' work lies in her exceptional gift for observation, her meticulous attention to detail, and her caustic view of contemporary society. Her passion for literature shines through in each of her works, making her a key figure on the international art scene. An opportunity to discover or rediscover her world at this Parisian exhibition! Shall we go?
