Later this January 2019, Sea Life Paris Ile Aux Manchots has welcomed 3 new lodgers. As a matter of fact, new King penguins from the Brest aquarium have settled in the Marne la Vallée penguin display.
So, a female and two males born in captivity at the Zurich zoo between 1996 and 1998 have joined the penguin colony already present in Sea Life since summer 2017.
Marne la Vallée Sea Life aquarium is a genuine example of adjustment for this species which scientific name is Aptenodytes patagonicus since Flocon, the first King penguin baby was born only a few months after the mother’s move in.
Both aquariums specialists have estimated that this new environment would be more suited to breed the species. Moreover, the survival of a colony of penguin also depends on the genetic mixing. So, integrating new specimens to an already-existing group could enable them to breed easier.
While 70% of the King penguins have threatened to disappear by the end of the century because of the global warming, the fact to have perpetuated the species thanks to births in captivity could also enable us to reintroduce them in their natural environment if the natural conditions are favorable.
These magnificent penguins are to be discovered among the 350 animals species inhabiting the 50 pools of Sea Life Paris aquarium.
