The Carnaval Tropical de Paris returns to Paris this year on October 6, 2024. This colorful parade takes over the Champs-Elysées avenue as soon as the Olympic Games come to an end, with music, dance and traditional costumes representing cultures from the four corners of the globe. This 22nd edition will be a showcase for the values of Olympism, with the participation of several medal-winning ultra-marine athletes, including fencers Enzo Lefort and Yannick Borel.

For once, the Carnaval Tropical, usually held in Paris in July, has had its 23rd edition postponed until after the summer, in view of the Olympic Games. The date is set for October 6, 2024, when this festive event will take over the world's most beautiful avenue.

As every year, hundreds of dancers and some thirty carnival groups will parade down the Champs-Elysées avenue for the occasion. For the occasion, several associations from Paris and the Île-de-France region will be parading their traditional costumes and dances, proudly representing cultures from the four corners of the globe.

The Carnaval Tropical is part of the city's tradition of major cultural events. It closes the Olympic year's cultural program for the French overseas territories, which kicked off on June 1 and 2 with the "Nuit Blanche Outre-Mer" in Paris and the French overseas territories.

After the Nuit Blanche, the Olympic Flame's route and relays took place in June in French Guiana, Reunion, Polynesia, Guadeloupe and Martinique, before returning to Paris. The Flame will stop at Place du Général Catroux, in the 17th arrondissement, on July 15, for a commemoration in the Solitude garden and in front of the Fers Brisés statue.

To close this Olympic period in the French overseas territories, Sunday, October 6, 2024 has been chosen to celebrate the magnificence of the Carnaval Tropical in Paris. This year's theme, " Overseas united by Olympism ", will no doubt inspire the twenty participating troupes from Paris, the Île-de-France region, as well as Peru, Colombia, Bolivia and the Dominican Republic.

The Rond-Point des Champs-Élysées will be open to the public from 12pm, while the start of the Carnaval Tropical is scheduled for 1pm, from the bottom of the Rond-Point des Champs-Élysées, which will be pedestrianized as part of the Paris Respire operation. The procession will then march towards the Arc de Triomphe before returning to the Rond-Point, where each group will present its choreography to the jury, set up in front of the grandstand.

The Carnaval Tropical de Paris is without doubt the capital's biggest carnival. Every year, it attracts some 200,000 spectators for a highly animated parade. Initiated more than 20 years ago, this carnival was originally organized by West Indians in mainland France, but today sees many different origins come together, including China, Brazil, England, Holland and Colombia.

For the record, what is Carnaval Tropical? It's a gathering of hundreds of colorful costumes from all over the world, with music ranging from the traditional to the exotic, and choreography imagined for the occasion that gives free rein to the groups present to blend history and creativity. There's also a competition to reward the best performances in front of the grandstand at the end of the show.

New for this 2024 edition, the City of Paris will be giving even greater recognition to the quality and performance of the troupes by awarding prizes to the winners. The City of Paris will be awarding the following 4 prizes:

  • 1st prize in all categories, known as the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris: 3,000 euros
  • Music category prize: 500 euros
  • Costume prize: 500 euros
  • Prize in the Choreography category: 500 euros

In short, we don't want to miss this special edition, which for once takes place in October and will take us to meetEnzo Lefort, team foil bronze medallist and Yannick Borel, individual epee silver medallist at the Paris 2024 Games, among others.
