The Musée du Louvre is devoting an exhibition to Pharaoh Taharqa, former king of Napata, ancient capital of a vast kingdom in Nubia (present-day Sudan), from April 27 to July 25, 2022. An opportunity to learn more about one of the best-known rulers of his time.

A plunge into the heart of the African continent and its history... The Musée du Louvre invites lovers of ancient history to discover the exhibition Pharaoh of the Two Lands. The African Epic of the Kings of Napata from April 27 to July 25, 2022. A retrospective of the kings of Nubia, including the most famous of them all, Taharqa, who comes to tell us his extraordinary story.

But before we go any further, let's take a look at the history of Nubia, a kingdom organized around its capital, Napata, in the 8th century BC. Around 730 BC, Piankhi, ruler of this kingdom, set out to conquer Egypt, inaugurating the dynasty of the Kushite pharaohs.

A dynasty that stood the test of time, as for more than 50 years, its successors reigned unrivalled over"a kingdom stretching from the Mediterranean to the confluence of the White and Blue Niles". And this is where Taharqa,"pharaoh of the two lands", also known as Oaikhaou (his Horus name) and Nefertemkhourê(Nefertoum protects Re, his royal name), comes into the picture.

The exhibition focuses on the leading role played by this historical figure and his vast kingdom, now located in central Sudan. Statues, hieroglyphic stelae, papyrus and other works of art from all over the world(Musée du Louvre, British Museum, Ägyptisches Museum in Berlin...) await you, immersing you in a history dating back several millennia...

You'll discover a dynasty whose history changed the landscape of Egypt in every way. It's also an opportunity to discover a part of the history of civilizations not necessarily known to all. Shall we go, friends?
