Did you know? While Notre-Dame proudly dominates the capital, beneath its forecourt lies another, more secret treasure: the Crypte Archéologique de Paris. In this mysterious place, you can step back in time and immerse yourself in the history of the City of Light. It's here that vestiges dating back to Antiquity can be discovered, only recently discovered during archaeological excavations carried out between 1965 and 1972.
In the 1970s, the crypt beneath the Île de la Cité was converted to reveal these precious discoveries to the general public from 1980 onwards. Since then, it has been possible to retrace the evolution of the capital over more than 2,000 years of history. From Antiquity, through the Middle Ages and Haussmanian redevelopments, you can see how Paris became the splendid city it is today.
A veritable rendezvous with history awaits you under the Ile de la Cité for this rendezvous with the history of Paris. There are also regular temporary exhibitions that bring the site to life. A great opportunity to discover - or rediscover - this underground jewel of the capital... Shall we go, friends?
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
