An artificial lake hidden in the underground passages of the Opéra Garnier in Paris? No, it's not an urban legend, but reality. So why is it there, and can you visit it? We tell you all about it.

It's a mysterious lake that is said to have inspired Gaston Leroux to write his legendary novel"Le fantôme de l'Opéra". Few people know it, but beneath the grand auditorium of theOpéra Garnier lies an artificial lake. Located some ten meters below the stage, this artificial lake was imagined and designed by the Paris Opera's architect, Charles Garnier (1825-1898).

As is so often the case, construction work brings unpleasant surprises. When work began on the Palais Garnier in 1861, Charles Garnier discovered that the site on which the Opéra Garnier was to be built was marshy. The building was also threatened by water infiltration. So the architect came up with the idea of designing a large, totally watertight artificial tank measuring 25 by 50 meters, surrounded by vaults. The aim was simple: to channel the water and maintain the foundations of the sumptuous building.

As mysterious as it is, this artificial lake - or rather water-filled tank - located in the underground passages of the Opéra Garnier fascinates the most curious. Unfortunately, it is not open to the public. It is therefore impossible to admire it with one's own eyes. Only the Paris fire department has ever had the chance to see it, as they train there from time to time. The tank would also serve as a reservoir in the event of a fire at the Opéra Garnier. On the other hand, it is possible to visit it virtually thanks to the Google Arts and Culture platform.
