Yes, you read that right: two days of festivities this July, to commemorate one of the most important dates in French history.
Indeed, July 14th in France symbolizes the French Revolution, the end of absolute monarchy and the beginning of a more egalitarian, more democratic society. Traditionally, on this date every year, the whole of France gathers in its communes to dance, admire the fireworks and share a moment together.
And the town of Ris-Orangis is no exception: this commune on the banks of the Seine can even claim to be more republican than the others! In 1790, Ris-Orangis (still just a wine-growing village) was the first French commune to elect a mayor.
