The European urged its state members to “speed up” Covid vaccinations with one goal: giving the doses to over 70% adults by the end of August 2021, as well as 80% of the health workforce and people aged 80+ by March.

The European Union seems to be willing to be done with the Covid crisis! This Tuesday January 19, 2021 Brussels urged the 27 state members to “accelerate” vaccinations in order to protect 70% of adults by the end of August 2021, as well as 80% of the health workforce and people aged 80+ by next March.

Vaccinations must accelerate” Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides says at a press conference. The reason for her address? The slow pace in giving vaccine in EU countries, in comparison with their neighbors such as the United-Kingdom, Israel or even the United-States of America. “By March 2021, at least 80% of people over the age of 80, and 80% of health and social care professionals in every Member State should be vaccinated” Vice-President Margaritis Schinas says.

He adds: “and by summer 2021, Member States should have vaccinated a minimum of 70% of the adult population”. A challenge the 27 countries will have to take up… For the record, in France, a million people are to be vaccinated by late January. A data that – eventually – may reach 15 million by summer 2021, which is still far from 70% expected by the EU.
