Covid: what are long Covid symptoms?

Thousands of people suffer from long Covid after being infected with the virus. Fatigue, shortness of breath, pain: what does this new disease feature?

The Haute Autorité de Santé considers there are between 250,000 and 300,000 people suffering from long Covid in France, six months after their contamination.

According to the health organization long Covid breaks out if the virus symptoms persist beyond four weeks after the period one has been contaminated. In most cases, sick say they have several symptoms.

On France Inter, head of medicine and readaptation unit at Suresnes Foch hospital Nicolas Barizien has established a profile of people the most hit by this disease set in the long run.

Young people between 25 and 60 years old are the most hit by long Covid, and especially active women without comorbidities. Although young people are less likely to die of Covid-19, they are more likely to suffer from the disease in the long run.

What are the symptoms of long Covid, now handicapping thousands of people?

The health insurance website lists the most common symptoms:

  • “general” signs: long-lasting pain, weak joints or muscles, or extreme fatigue, headaches, breathing disorder, cutaneous issues, anxiety, sleep disorder

  • Loss of smell and/or taste or disorder

  • Kidney, digestive, pulmonary and neurological complications

Are also reported: memory problems, palpitations, dizziness after an effort, shortness of breath, vertigo, speaking problems, chest pain…

What if you are suffering from long Covid? You first need to contact your general practitioner who will then officially diagnose the disease, to “help you reeducate and self-manage symptoms likely to disturb your daily life”, and if need be, guide you to specialists who will help you all along your recovery.
