The fourth coronavirus epidemic wave barely finished peaking and a fifth one seems to arrive already. Said unavoidable by the Institut Pasteur, the latter shared prospects explaining what it could be like.

Although the fourth wave that occurred in the summer of 2021 was expected, the scenario of an epidemic peak this Fall is yet an eventuality said likely for the past few months. This Monday September 6, 2021, the Institut Pasteur reaffirms the soon outbreak of this fifth wave. Yet, these prospects have been somehow altered because of the evolution of the vaccination campaign.

Covid: What if France could prevent the fifth wave?
Will France be hit by a fifth covid wave? As back in early September the Institut Pasteur explained in a study it would be “hard to prevent”, this early October 2021, epidemiologists sound more optimistic. Keep reading to find out more! [Read more]

Therefore, the implementation of the health pass, vaccinal cover is eventually higher than estimations carried out in June. Moreover, although vaccines are rather effective according to the institute, it is yet lower faced with the Delta variant now dominating in France.

Taking into account all these new criteria, as well as the variations in the vaccine cover depending on age groups, as well as the probability to get hospitalized if one is vaccinated or not, the Institut Pasteur has corrected their vision of what the fifth coronavirus epidemic wave could be like.

Therefore, the non-vaccinated population could have a major impact on the hospital pressure hazard and accelerate the viral transmission. “Controlling measures targeting at this population could maximize the control of the epidemic while minimizing the societal impact in comparison with non-targeting measures”, the Institut Pasteur recommends.

On the other hand, the Institut Pasteur also recommends people vaccinated to keep complying with health guidelines and keep their guards up since according to their projections, this population could be half of the infections, although the probability to develop severe disease is lower.
