The Easter Bunny has come and gone, depositing delicious gifts in your cupboards... Right now, chocolate lovers are in for a treat! But beware: this festive season can quickly turn into a nightmare. Humans love chocolate, but it's not good for everyone in your household. Animals are very sensitive to chocolate, which is poisonous to them.
Chocolate contains theobromine, a toxic molecule that can cause digestive and cardiac problems in animals, and can even lead to death if ingested in excessive quantities! Humans' great digestive capacity enables us to eliminate this molecule quickly, but dogs have a much slower system, so they are more fragile when faced with chocolate.
So dogs, as well as cats and horses, should avoid chocolate altogether. Beware: dogs are great gourmets, with a big sweet tooth: chocolate is a real forbidden treat for them. Note that dark chocolate is the most toxic for our animal friends, while white chocolate is less dangerous (but not recommended).
Has your little four-legged friend managed to get his truffle into the chocolate supply? Keep a close eye on his behavior: if he vomits, has diarrhea, is panting excessively, is unusually agitated, trembling, or even convulsing, he's intoxicated! In this case, don't try to make your pet vomit: call your vet immediately so that he can treat your dog or cat as a matter of urgency.
Chocolate is strictly forbidden for our little fur balls. But don't worry: you can still enjoy your chocolate chicken or bunny! In moderation, of course...
