The traditional hollowed-out pumpkin has its origins in Jack O'Lantern, an old Irish tale about Jack, a notoriously cruel drunkard. Although the Devil had condemned him to live in hell for eternity, Jack managed to turn things to his advantage and never went there. Finally, Jack died on December 31st: the gates of heaven and hell remained closed. Caught between two worlds, Jack picked up a lump of burning coal on his way and placed it inside a carved turnip, henceforth known as Jack O'Lantern. Over the centuries, the turnip was replaced by the pumpkin, and now it's always pumpkins that are carved for Halloween.
In Paris and the Ile-de-France region, there are numerous pick-your-own gardens where you can harvest fruit, vegetables and flowers all year round. This autumn, it's the perfect time to pick squash, pumpkins and other pumpkins at various locations in the region: and you can even stock up on local fruit and vegetables, grown in respectful agriculture and sold at a lower price than in supermarkets!
