Lovers of Impressionist paintings know that many of them, particularly those by Pissarro, Corot, Daumier, Cézanne, Dupré, Daubigny, Piette, Gauguin and Van Gogh, were inspired by the landscapes of Pontoise and the surrounding area.
A visit to Pontoise, Auvers-sur-Oise or l'Isle-Adam is the perfect way to stroll through the gardens and forests that served as models for the greatest painters, and to enjoy the rich and varied flora. But Pontoise is also famous for its market-gardening and wine-growing past, which once flourished around the Hastrel press.
And so, not far from the last troglodytic houses of the Hermitage is the Hermitage oven, an unusual place that opens its doors for the Journées du Patrimoine 2024, on Saturday September 21 and Sunday September 22, and even one day before the official launch of the event, on Friday September 20, 2024.
It's an opportunity for bakery enthusiasts to get their hands dirty and bake bread the old-fashioned way... before enjoying it, of course! Discover the detailed program of the Journées du Patrimoine 2024 at the Hermitage bakery below!
The Hermitage's early 19th-century oven was brought up to temperature from Wednesday September 18 to Friday September 20. Passionate bakers bake bread for visitors. Local residents bring their own dough to bake in the oven. A pizza is offered to volunteers at the end of the event. The warm-up is an opportunity to explain the type of oven and the variety of wood used, as well as the oven's current and past operating conditions.
