Journées du Patrimoine 2024: events to discover the history of the Hôtel-Dieu in Paris

TheHôtel-Dieu hospital is the oldest hospital in Paris, founded in 651 as a charitable foundation for the poor, infirm and sick. The hospital as we know it today was largely rebuilt between 1867 and 1878, between Place du Parvis and Rue de la Cité. Hôtel-Dieu is part of the Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris group.

This historic building in Paris is taking part in the latest edition of the Journées du Patrimoine. On September 21 and 22, 2024, the Hôtel-Dieu opens its doors to curious visitors and history buffs of all stripes. Every year, the Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days) offer us the opportunity to discover or rediscover the capital's monuments, museums, places of power and culture, over the course of an exceptional weekend. More than 1,500 sites take part in this event in Paris and the Île-de-France region: enough to satisfy all tastes and passions.

  Two fascinating lectures will be given on Saturday September 21 and Sunday September 22 by the association La Cité. Entitled "L'Hôtel-Dieu, des origines à nos jours, autour du parvis de Notre-Dame" (The Hôtel-Dieu, from its origins to the present day, around the square in front of Notre-Dame), and hosted by Yves and Christine Bru, members of the association, these lectures will retrace the fascinating history of this monument, from its architecture and multiple transformations to its importance in the medical and social landscape of Paris. Yves and Christine Bru will bring to life the milestones of this emblematic building, illustrating its evolution through the ages.
