A former Cistercian women's abbey (Notre-Dame-La Royale) founded by Blanche de Castille in the 11th century, today we find the barn and part of the carré claustral, i.e. the chapter house, parlour, nuns' room and toilets. The abbey's vaulted rooms are adorned with magnificent stained glass windows and green and yellow glazed terracotta.

Next to the abbey, the 10-hectare park offers visitors archaeological remains and ancient hydraulic structures. Since 2001, this building has been dedicated to the plastic and visual arts, offering installations in keeping with the architecture of the site and its heritage. A beautiful place to discover, or rediscover, on the occasion of this 41st edition of the Journées du Patrimoine. Let's make a note of it in our diaries, folks?

Detailed program for the Journées du Patrimoine 2024 at Abbaye de Maubuisson, Saint-Ouen-L'Aumône (Val d'Oise) :

  • Exceptional opening of the barn
    September 21 and 22

The barn, built in 1240, is located on the outskirts of the Maubuisson estate.

The imposing building, originally divided into three naves, lost its east aisle at the beginning of the 19th century. Thirteenth-century ashlar columns, surmounted by drop-leaf capitals, support a largely original thirteenth-century oak roof frame. On the outside, buttresses reinforce the building. The Abbaye de Maubuisson team is mobilizing for the European Heritage Days to breathe new life into the barn and give you a warm welcome: historical exhibition, documentary films, exhibition archives, reading room, games...

  • Reconstitutions with Association Le Créatif
    September 21 and 22

Le Créatif is a cultural and sports association based in L'Isle-Adam, which practices European Historical Martial Arts (or AMHE) and also does historical re-enactment around the medieval period. L'Ordonnance Saint-Michel 1453 is the name used for historical re-enactment events at the end of the Middle Ages, in reference to the grand compagnie d'ordonnance and Saint-Michel, patron saint of France and fencers.
For the European Heritage Days, the association Le Créatif and its French armed corps called "lance" bring the cloister of Maubuisson to life. Various workshops will highlight different aspects of life in the late Middle Ages, including cooking, with a presentation of different foods, utensils and cooking techniques, wool weaving and cord making, weapons and armor used in jousting and warfare, and appropriate martial techniques.

  • Historical guided tours
    September 21 and 22

Although a victim of the ravages of time, Maubuisson Abbey remains an exceptional heritage site, halfway between the sobriety of Cistercian architecture and the splendor of a royal necropolis. As the tour winds its way through the estate, taking in the Chapter House, the remains of the former church, the collecting canal and the 13th-century barn, visitors can see for themselves the daily life of the medieval nuns. Discover eight centuries of an unsuspectedly rich history.

  • Maubuisson à tire-d'aile" guided tour
    September 21 and 22

An animal from all walks of life and a fascinating figure in many stories, what better way to stroll through the alleys, canals and works of art that make up the park than with a bird? This is what this storytelling tour offers, punctuated by stops to listen and observe.
