Every May 1st, there are numerous demonstrations across France to mark Labour Day and International Workers' Day.
This year, theintersyndicale is planning a demonstration under the banner of unity, in a tense international context marked by armed conflicts. The mobilization also comes at a crucial time, just before the European elections in June 2024, underlining the political importance of this gathering.
The procession is due to gather at 1:30pm on Place de la République, covering the 3rd, 10th and 11th arrondissements. Departure is set for 2 p.m. sharp. From there, demonstrators will take Boulevard Voltaire, passing through Place de la Bastille-locatedbetween the 4th, 11th and 12th arrondissements-before concluding their march at Place de la Nation, which marks the boundary between the 11th and 12th arrondissements.
Although specific details of the police presence have yet to be confirmed, it is expected to be substantial. Indeed, for the previous edition in 2023, nearly 5,000 police and gendarmes were mobilized to supervise some 100,000 participants. Announcements concerning traffic restrictions are expected shortly from the Paris Prefecture of Police.
The May 1st demonstration in Paris is not only an annual tradition, but also a means of expressing current social and political concerns. It promises to be a large-scale gathering, reflecting the tensions and aspirations of French society on the eve ofEuropean elections.
