Miss France: A transgender candidate enters the contest for the first time in Paris

This is a first in the Miss France beauty pageant, 19-year-old transgender candidate Andréa Furet is included as one of the runner-ups for Miss Paris for the Miss France 2023 election.

During the past Miss France 2022 elections, when Miss Ile-de-France Diane Leyre was crowned, the participation of a transgender woman was brought up. Miss France president Alexia Laroche-Joubert then answered this will be “no issue” for a non-cisgender candidate to enter the beauty pageant. This year, 19-year-old transgender candidate Andréa Furet could mark history if she was to pass all the steps.

The young woman would be the first transgender candidate in the history of the contest. She is – and 12 other people – running for the title of Miss Paris, to then access to the Miss Ile-de-France pageant.

Unlike Alexia Laroche-Joubert, in 2019, Sylvie Tellier was expressing reservations as for the candidacy of a transgender woman, considering the French were not “ready”. And yet, some international beauty pageants set an example. Transgender model Angela Ponce won Miss Universe Spain in 2018, and was allowed to compete for Miss Universe, a first. In 2021, Miss Nevada 2021 Kataluna Enriquez became the first transgender woman to compete for Miss USA. More on June 19, 2022, when Miss Paris will be crowned.
