On the evening of Monday April 7, a major fire engulfed the Syctom waste sorting center in the 17th arrondissement of Paris. This Tuesday, April 8, several sectors are closed to the public to facilitate the clean-up of the area.

It was a sight that caught the attention of all Parisians on Monday evening: a large cloud of smoke rose into the skies over the capital on April 7, 2025. The smoke was caused by a fire at Syctom's waste sorting center in the ZAC Clichy-Batignolles, in the 17th arrondissement.

The disaster mobilized almost 200 firefighters, and the national and municipal police were called in to secure the perimeter around the sorting center.

As of Tuesday April 8, the situation is under control: the fire is not yet fully extinguished, but it is under control and should be fully extinguished by the end of the day.

The 13,000 m², multi-storey sorting center was completely destroyed by the flames. Fortunately, the fire did not spread to the surrounding buildings, and the neighborhood did not suffer from the disaster. However, the city's security services decided to close off certain areas of the 17th arrondissement, for the safety of local residents, and to facilitate the work of the fire-fighting teams still on site.

The City of Paris website states: " The outer ring road was closed between Porte de Champerret and Porte de Saint-Ouen. The various access points were gradually reopened. Parc Martin-Luther-King (17th arrondissement) was closed, as were Square Paul-Paray (17th arrondissement) and Jardin Claire-Motte (17th arrondissement). The City of Paris cleaning services are mobilized and are carrying out a reinforced cleaning of the site over the whole area, which includes part of the boulevard périphérique, rue de Saussure, avenue de Clichy and rue Cardinet. "

The City of Paris also reminds people to keep their windows closed if they live in the area. Airparif, the air quality monitoring organization, assures us that there is no trace of toxicity in the air.
