Empty terminals on departure, full ones on arrival, many bikes unusable, batteries always flat... Vélib' users have no trouble expressing their anger at the service, which suffers from numerous malfunctions. In the pages of 20 Minutes, Stéphane Volant, President of Smovengo (the Vélib' operator), responded to these accusations, while outlining the future direction of the self-service bicycles.
According to him, the main solution to most of these problems is first and foremost to double the number of bikes in circulation, as well as the number of stations. "We have 400,000 subscribers and around 180,000 uses per day, for 19,000 bikes", he told the daily. And the number of users is likely to rise sharply with the disappearance of self-service scooters. As Stéphane Volant assures us, 10,000 bikes have been ordered and 1,500 new terminals will be installed. The operation is scheduled for completion in 2024. To finance this expansion, Mr. Volant suggests a slight increase in subscription prices.
