The French Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, recently announced that sanitary protection would be reimbursed in 2024, in order to combat (at least in part) menstrual precariousness.

It's a project that will be in the 2024 budget, Prime Minister Elizabeth Borne has assured: sanitary pads will be reimbursed during 2024, provided certain criteria are met. This new measure aims to combat menstrual precariousness.

Only young women under the age of 25 will be eligible for reimbursement, which will apply to reusable sanitary protection only. Menstrual briefs, washable pads or menstrual cups: for the moment, we don't know how much will be reimbursed for each of these reusable protections, or which brands will ultimately be eligible.

Periodic protection must be purchased in pharmacies for women under 25 to be reimbursed by Social Security. Menstrual precariousness refers to the difficulty women and girls have in affording sanitary protection due to low income: by 2023, more than 4 million French women were affected by this precariousness, according to figures from the FrenchNational Assembly.
