In France, nearly 4 million womenaged 18 to 50 are victims of menstrual insecurity, according to the Règles Élémentaires association. To combat this lack of access to menstrual protection, particularly among young women, the Essonne département has decided to equip 100% of its public secondary schools with free dispensers, from the start of the 2023 school year, and to break the taboo surrounding this subject.
In recent years, the high schools in the Île-de-France region had gradually benefited from this installation, but middle-school girls, who are also affected by menstruation, were still left out. The next step for Cendrine Chaumont, departmental councillor for Essonne, is to install them in elementary school, according to Le Parisien. Tampons and pads will now be available to all those who need them.
For many young women, middle school is the time when their first period appears, and the shame that can ensue if explanations have not been given beforehand. Pupils will receive a booklet to help them learn more about the subject and avoid taboos. A real benefit for nearly 37,000 girls.
