Historically,Île Saint-Denis was inhabited by fishing families. Seen from the air, it is 7 kilometers long, crescent-shaped - or banana-shaped, as you prefer - and remainsone of the smallest communes in Seine-Saint-Denis, both in terms of surface area and number of inhabitants.
Because of its location, Île Saint-Denis is the only town in France whose entire municipal boundary is a river: on either side - Gennevilliers and Villeneuve-la-Garenne, or Saint-Denis and Épinay-sur-Seine - the island is encircled by the Seine, and this is what makes it so special. In the 19th century, Alfred Sisley, in particular, painted fishermen and country scenes here, giving his name to a promenade dedicated to him in the Île Saint-Denis departmental park. It is even said that the studies for Claude Monet 'sDéjeuner sur l' herbe were done here. Île Saint-Denis is definitely unique in the Île-de-France region: on the one hand, it has a very urban feel, with the Marcel Paul housing estate (located on Île aux Vannes), while on the other, the park boasts a wealth of flora and fauna in its natural areas.
Two personalities have left their mark on Île Saint-Denis: Ravachol, a French anarchist militant and criminal, and Marcel Paul, a French communist militant and politician, known for having been a minister under General de Gaulle in 1945. Sometimes bucolic, often little-known, Île Saint-Denis is as singular as it is unique: if you'd like to take a stroll, it's easily accessible by public transport (metro line 14, get off at mairie de Saint-Ouen, then walk for ten minutes).
