Hurricane Kirk is still going strong. The low-pressure system is now sweeping across the Yvelines region, bringing heavy downpours that are turning roads into veritable rivers. At 7pm, the Yvelines Prefecture of Police announced the closure of several roads in the worst-affected communes.
The situation remains delicate in Rambouillet, where mayor Véronique Matillon reports that a crisis center has been set up due to water levels reaching up to one meter in places. All night long, patrols were keeping watch over at-risk areas, notably the often-flooded Groussay plain. More than 40 mm of rain has already been recorded in the commune, with up to 80 mm more expected, equivalent to fifteen days' rainfall in a single day.
Vigilance is also called for in Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse, where the Saint-Exupéry school will be closed tomorrow. Located at the confluence of the Yvette and Montabé streams, this kindergarten with 180 pupils is particularly vulnerable to flooding, informs Le Parisien. The commune, having suffered significant damage during floods in 2018, is taking no chances: furniture has been raised and sandbags have been distributed to shopkeepers. Pupils will be accommodated at the Envol leisure center, pending a return to normal.
The authorities' recommendations remain strict: limit travel and above all avoid driving on flooded roads, even if partially submerged, to avoid any accidents. Sewage systems are also at risk of overflowing, which could further complicate the situation. Further closures are expected if the rains continue, and the evolution of rivers is being closely monitored.
As Storm Kirk continues on its way, we're expecting an eventful night in the Yvelines, where caution is still the order of the day in the face of flooding that is only just beginning. In any case, follow the Prefecture's advice:
